HISTOCHEMICAL DEMONSTRATION OF HYDROLYTIC ENZYMES AND DEHYDROGENASES IN THE ORAL MUCOSA OF CATS

SHOHEI KAGAWA 1 and KIYOSHI OSANAI 1

1 Department of Oral Surgery, Osaka University Dental School, Kitaku, Osaka, Japan

A histochemical study was made of several hydrolytic enzymes and dehydrogenases in cat oral mucosae. The activity of alkaline phosphatase, though with some difference in degree, was generally confined to the basal cell layer and superficial cell layer of the oral epithelium. Acid phosphatase was observed in the superficial layer of the oral epithelium. Esterase was demonstrated in epithelial cells, especially in the parakeratinized layer. Aminopeptidase was absent in all the oral mucosa of the eat. beta-Glucuronidase activity was observed homogeneously through the epithelium. Succinic, lactic and malic dehydrogenases were generally present in the basal cell layer and adjacent prickle cells, and they were absent in the superficial layer.
