DEHYDROGENASES IN DEVELOPING TEETH OF RATS

Odontogenesis was studied in unfixed cryostatcut sections of 5-day old rats with histochemical methods for the demonstration of succinic, malic, isocitric, glutamic, lactic, beta-hydroxybutyrate, agr-glycerophosphate, glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases and DPN and TPN diaphorases. Except for weak glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases, odontogenic tissues (particularly ameloblasts, odontoblasts and stratum intermedium cells) exhibited moderate activity indicating a broad metabolic behaviour of these cells.

Cells of the stratum intermedium and the stellate reticulum display an enzymatic activity parallel to ameloblasts which suggests that they participate actively in amelogenesis.

Tetranitro-BT and Nitro BT appear to give definitive localization of dehydrogenase activity.
