A MICROSPECTROPHOTOMETRIC STUDY OF METACHROMASIA

HENRY TROYER 1

1 Departments of Anatomy and Medicine, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia 30902

From hyaluronidase digestion studies of costal cartilage it was determined that stoichiometric relationships do not exist between metachromatic dyes and anionic groups on chondroitin sulfate of low concentrations or low molecular weight. Therefore, it may not always be possible to obtain a true estimate of chondroitin sulfate in tissue with metachromatic stains.
