GIANT LYSOSOMES IN CULTURED MONKEY KIDNEY CELLS

GEORGIRENE D. VLADUTIU 1 and NOEL R. ROSE 1

1 The Center for Immunology and the Department of Microbiology, State University of New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, New York 14214

Following staining with an esterase-specific rabbit antiserum, using the indirect immunofluorescent technique, a large body was observed in close apposition to the nucleus of cultured monkey kidney cells. It is present mainly during the lag and early logarithmic phases of growth. The available evidence suggests that the structure is an autophagic giant lysosome.
