An interactive system for measuring and classifying cells is discussed. Techniques developed in several artificial intelligence systems are used to provide for a computer-controlled microscope and peripheral hardware a language and control mechanisms to permit the interactive description of cell models. In particular, the system will initially be applied to the analysis of bone marrow smears. An example is given to illustrate the descriptive modeling capability.
